Oscar A. Anderson (Sr.) Household – US 1880 Census

I’ve decided to focus my energy on the Anderson side of the family…Troy’s paternal grandmothers family. So, I’m starting with a timeline and filling in the documents I would expect to find for the family. Birth, Marriage, Death records and Censuses. There are other “side” documents too, but I won’t know what I should look for until I have a base of “events” to work around.

Here’s how this family relates to Troy:

This first census is actually Troy’s great-great Grandfather and his young wife and child in 1880. This was taken 4 months before Troy’s great-grandfather was born, so Thirza (or Thersea) would have been pregnant at this point.

Secrets and Lies…

I was sitting with my mother in the hospital today for a few hours and thought, since I had my laptop, I might take a look at some database information on Utah marriages and organize what I wanted to get at the Utah State Archives.

In this process, Aliene and Eugene Lund showed up on my list…Troy’s grandparents. I don’t have a place for her first or last marriages (she was married and divorced 3 times), but she lived in Utah. However, her 2nd marriage, to Troy’s grandfather, took place in Wyoming. I thought, since I had time, and no where to go I would try to see what Wyoming had online. It was quite confusing so I decided to call them.

The archivist was extremely helpful and after I gave her the information I had, she said she’d pull the certificate and email it to me.

When she called me back she informed me that Aliene was listed on her Marriage certificate as Aliene Harvey (1st married name) and listed as divorced. Also, the date on the certificate didn’t match what I had on file.

Here’s the Certificate:

So, the date I had on file – which was listed in Aliene’s own “Book of Rememberances” on multiple pages (so it’s not a typo) was 11 May 1945 – one year earlier.

Aliene and Eugene’s son was born in November of 1946…6 months later! It would appear she was pregnant before they were married.

My burning question – Why did they go to Wyoming to get married? They are both from the Ogden, Utah area, as are both Witnesses.

Also, I would like to track down all of Aliene and Eugene’s divorce records. Those should be interesting as well.

SNGF – "Heritage Pie Chart" – Troy’s side

A few weeks ago Randy Seaver posted a Saturday Night Geneaology Fun Challenge. It’s taken me this long to get to it!

Your mission tonight, should you decide to accept it, is to:
     1. List your 16 great-great-grandparents with their birth, death and marriage data (dates and places).  [Hint – you might use an Ancestral Name List from your software for this.]
     2. Determine the countries (or states) that these ancestors lived in at their birth and at their death.
     3. For extra credit, go make a “Heritage Pie” chart for the country of origin (birth place) for these 16 ancestors. [Hint: you could use the  chart generator from Kid Zone for this.] [Note: Thank you to Sheri Fenley for the “Heritage Pie” chart idea.]
     4. Tell us about it in your own blog post, in a comment to this post, or in a post on Facebook or google+.

I decided to split this up into two posts, one for Troy and one for me. Today, I’ll share Troy’s chart:

As you can see, this was the immigrating generation! Take a look at the raw data:

While most were born outside of the United States (9 out of 14), all died in the United States, and of those, all but one in Utah. Troy is from LDS Pioneer stock on both sides.

Here’s the details on everyone.
I just used the “narrative report” option in Roots Magic to get all this information. It’s pretty long to read through, but this may help someone who’s doing a google search on these same ancestors – I’d love to meet new cousins! You can really tell who I’ve done the most research on!

Through Her Eyes #3

Grandfather [Oscar Alfred Sr.], then homesteaded a ranch near by at Dry Creek. They had seven children born to them, Mary Elizabeth, Oscar Alfred Jr., Haken William, Joseph Doyle, Denis Marion, Harriet Elnore and Thirza Lavinie. They prospered and was a happy family enjoying farm life and they enjoyed visiting the neighbors and have the neighbors visit with them. The people in this farming comunity [sic] were very friendly and close to one other. They were always there when help was needed.
Then one day tragedy struck their home. Grandmother [Thirza Jane Lee] was stricken ill and passed away on July 16, 1894, leaving Grandfather and his small family, the eldest was 15 years old and the youngest, was 2½ years old. Grandfather’s sister Nora took the youngest, Thirza Lavinie to raise.

Elizabeth being the eldest and learned many things from her beloved mother on how a house was run so she was like a little mother taking over and with the help of the other children and her father they got the situation well in hand life was recaptured and things soon on a happier out look for that family once again.

It seems that Kanosh was the hub of everything in those little communities and there is where their Social lives would begin. They had Saturday dances at the Church and Sunday afternoon picknicks. So as time went by and Mary Elizabeth became a beautiful young lady and was permitted to attend those dances, she met a fine young handsome man, Clarence Albert Barney, their romance began. When she was just past eighteen they were married on August 10, 1897. They stayed on at Grandfathers so as to help with the children.

To investigate:
  • Find BLM records for the homestead.
  • Verify names and birth dates for children.
  • What illness did Thirza Jane have? Verify death date. Where is she buried?
  • Is Thirza Lavinie in the next census with Nora’s family? Does she ever come back to live with her family?
  • Research Kanosh and what went on there. Is there a county/town history that can give more information about the social activities there?
  • Verify marriage date for Mary Elizabeth.
